ABOUT US

A Pub With Ancient Origins in The Quaint Village of Chilcompton

The Somerset Wagon has a long history in the village of Chilcompton, originally opening as an inn in 1874 when the village railway station was first opened. It was then called The Railway Inn and the first innkeeper was Thomas Watts.

We sit pretty in the middle of the beautiful Mendip Hills and our traditional village pub is full of original features. We’re a relaxed and welcoming pub, catering for villagers and visitors who come to enjoy our gardens in the summer and famous Sunday lunches all year round.

Meet Your Hosts, Dan and James

Your hosts, Dan and James, have been breathing new life into the pub since they took it over in 2022. Their aim was and is to run The Somerset Wagon as a traditional countryside pub that welcomes villagers and visitors to Chilcompton. The pair have a long history in the pub trade, renowned for their delicious food and fantastic Sunday lunches (boasting up to six meats).

People come to The Somerset Wagon for the food, the real ale and the welcoming atmosphere. The menus comprise a selection of traditional pub dishes with a twist, mostly made from locally sourced ingredients. The Somerset Wagon also keeps three pumps primed with real ales from nearby Wadworth Brewery in Devizes.

The duo successfully strike a happy balance between creating a pub that is both popular with the villagers of Chilcompton and visitors coming to enjoy the refined British dishes. The mixture of good food, good ales and a welcoming atmosphere offers a place to get away from it and enjoy the rural hospitality on offer day in day out.
